# Sublimation vs Screen Printing vs DTF vs Embroidery: Which Is Best for Sportswear?

Sublimation is best for full-color designs on polyester sportswear such as soccer, basketball and rugby kits. Screen printing is best for bold logos in a few colors on cotton or blends in larger runs. DTF suits full-color logos on almost any fabric in smaller runs, and embroidery is best for a premium, long-lasting logo on hoodies, polos and jackets.

## Sublimation printing

The design is printed on transfer paper and heat-pressed so the ink turns to gas and bonds with polyester fibres. Because there is no layer on top, the garment stays breathable and the print cannot crack. It is the standard for team uniforms with names and numbers, since each piece can be different at no extra cost. Limits: it needs polyester, and it can't print white or put light colors on dark fabric.

## Screen printing

Ink is pushed through a mesh screen, one screen per color. Setup takes time, so it is most economical for larger quantities (at Pro Bravio printing starts from 100 pieces), and the price per piece drops quickly as quantity rises. Specialty inks include puff, glow-in-the-dark, water-based and discharge for a soft hand feel. See [printing methods](https://probravio.com/printing-methods/).

## DTF (direct-to-film) printing

The design is printed on a film with adhesive powder and heat-pressed onto the garment. It reproduces full-color logos on dark and light fabrics and works on many fibres, which makes it useful for smaller runs and detailed artwork. It feels like a thin, flexible layer.

## Embroidery

Logos are stitched with thread, giving a raised, premium look that outlasts the garment. It suits chest logos on polos, hoodies, jackets and caps; 3D puff embroidery adds height, and patches work for varsity jackets. It is less suited to very large designs or thin performance fabrics. See [embroidery](https://probravio.com/embroidery/).

## Which method for which product?

- **Soccer, basketball, rugby, hockey kits:** sublimation, with twill or embroidery for crests if you want texture.
- **Cotton t-shirts and hoodies for a brand:** screen printing for runs of 100+, DTF or embroidery for smaller batches.
- **Leggings, sports bras, compression:** sublimation for patterns, heat-transfer logos for clean branding.
- **Polos and corporate wear:** embroidery.
- **Varsity jackets:** chenille patches plus embroidery.

### Does sublimation work on cotton?

No. Sublimation ink bonds only with polyester. On cotton the print washes out, so for cotton garments use screen printing, DTF or embroidery.

### Which printing lasts longest?

Sublimation and embroidery last the life of the garment. Screen printing with quality plastisol ink is also very durable. Wash printed garments inside out in cool water to make any print last longer.

### Which method is cheapest?

For larger runs of simple logos, screen printing usually has the lowest price per piece. For small runs or full-color designs, DTF or sublimation is often cheaper because there is no per-color setup.
